In a 1990s Oregon coastal town, two self-destructive teens are caught up in a drug-filled, obsessive romance, but when one rises into fame, their destructive spirals, self-doubt, and misconnections try to pull them apart.

1992, in a shitty coastal Oregon town, Adel Vex is a pill-popping, self-harming freak. 

A new kid, Oscar, becomes fixated on the idea of Adel. Caught up in her own intense attraction to him, they find each other as their single focus and an obsessive anchor during their mutual self-destruction.

When Adel’s band blows up on the scene, the couple’s ever-present self-doubt and time apart strain their fragile emotional security. Their obsession with the other intensifies as they grasp for any connection through long-distance calls and tour breaks. Fearing she is the only one still holding them together, Adel clings to a version of Oscar that she worries is based on a long-lost ghost, or maybe a boy he never was. With both failing to live up to the idealized version the other sees, they begin to spiral further into their worst impulses.

Overdosing on heroin is called “Falling out.” They’re scared of ODing, but they’re more terrified of falling out of love with each other.

Falling out is a dark recent historical literary novel completed in 114,000 words, featuring a tragic coming-of-age arc with crossover adult appeal. It spans characters from their late teens through their 20s, based in the PNW during the 1990s grunge scene.
